TIME TO SNUGGLE UP!

On this side of the world, as the winter months are setting in the cold weather spells are making us shiver, so what better investment could you possibly make than a cosy blanket?

A blanket couldn’t be more versatile: you can use it to relax at home on the couch or armchair while you read your favourite book or the Sunday papers, you can use it to sleep under on a chilly night (maybe add it to your duvet) or even as a coat, yes you hear me right: just belt it up and create a poncho shape or wear it laiafarrangravesbeautyspotover one shoulder (as seen here on Cara Delevingne at Burberry’s AW 2014 show). This is not only incredibly comfortable and warm, but a super-cool look, which has been spotted amongst celebs including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Olivia Palermo. I’ve also seen a dark grey blanket worn over a leather jacket and it looked fabulous. But when looking for a blanket, it’s important that you find something that’s light and warm in equal measures. This is where Alpaca would be my choice of fabric: it’s softer and warmer that wool, and more water-resistant than cashmere.

beautyspotblogFor a brand that delivers excellent quality at great prices, check out AlpacaGuapa, a great company which has a very user-friendly website. Check out their Lightweight 100% Baby Alpaca throw It is a really good size (184cm x 140cm) and comes in fantastic colours: blue, green, camel, dark grey, light green, dark grey, pink red and turquoise. I personally love the grey – I know it’s a bit safe but I really do like natural colours, especially in the home (white walls, natural wooden floors and touches of grey), but actually they’re all great shades so you’ll be spoilt for choice…

So, if you’re feeling like treating yourself or a friend to something to beat the January blues look no further…it’s on my wish list!

Editor’s favourite: Pretox Filler

laiafarrangravesbeautyspotI’m not a big fan of plastic surgery or botox, so I’m always interested in finding out what the latest medical advances in the Beauty Industry has to offer as a way of an alternative to such severe measures. I was recently given a great product called Pretox Filler from Medik8. The name is quite medical but the product itself is a great serum/gel in texture that is incredibly hydrating. So if – like me – you have a tendency to dry and dehydrated skin no matter how much water you drink during the day, this is a great option for you. Formulated with liposomes for better delivery what this product does is to deliver a high concentration of  hyaluronic acid to the skin achieving maximum hydration and consequently improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It helps restore the skin’s natural hydro balance, correct skin irregularities and plump out lines as a result of this. It’s not cheap (£52.00 per 30ml) but it does last a long time as you only need a small amount at a time. Give it a go if you’re concerned by fine lines caused by dehydration.  Medik8 products are available in clinics nationwide and at Medik8.com. The Pretox Filler is priced at £52.00 (30ml).

About the brand: Medik8 is dedicated to producing high quality skincare products with the best ingredients at the right strengths, and with a proven track record. The brand has tailored lines for specific skin solutions.

Barely there strawberry kiss

laiafarrangravesIf you like to wear natural looking make-up, you will love this product. It’s called Tin o’ Tint Strawberry, and it’s a coloured lip balm. This time of year, when the weather gets cold and windy, it’s essential that you moisturise your lips with a good lip balm, so this clever little product will multitask for you, giving you both the moisture you need and a touch of colour plus adding a delicious strawberry flavour to the mix. The colour is great, as it’s more of a stain than a lipstick, which is very on trend right now – i. e. natural lips with a hint of blush and healthy looking eyebrows. It highlights your lips ever so slightly to give you that healthy glow and make your teeth look a touch whiter. It’s ideal to wear in the day but also at night if you want to look understated but groomed.

It comes from Miners cosmetics and it’s priced at £2.99, making it a great stocking filler or gift to yourself 😉 We love it at Beauty Spot!

Back to the future SS15 hair report from one hairdresser to another…

This time, the fantastic hairdresser Adam Bennet checks out Ashley Isham’s Spring Summer 2015 show at London Fashion Week and speaks to Bill Watson, heading the team for Toni & Guy

beaituspot3The wonderfully charming Bill Watson heading up the team for Tony & Guy explained the look to his team ( listening to how he explained it backstage to his team was great!). There was a really nice atmosphere behind the scenes –  Bill & his team kept buoyant backstage – which is not always the case as catwalk shows can be extremely stressful, which let’s just say doesn’t always bring everybody’s best side out!

beautyspot4Step by Step
A clean, simple look started by prepping the girls’ hair  for wearing hats – creating a perfectly sleek and smooth contour at the back of the head – a little bit “blade runner futuristic sleek”. The hair was then smoothed to the front hairline, slightly off-centre, secured into a ponytail, twisted and pinned.

Two, “triggers” were pulled out in front of the ear like sideburns and the hat was then positioned on the side. All products used by the team were Label M – and the choice of products used was totally dependent on how the girls’ hair looked when they arrived!

laiafarrangravesIn essence, the look was clean and sophisticated without being too rigid. No fussy sections of hair, braids, accessories or intricate detail in sight! This look was specific to wearing hats, but the overall idea is one of simplicity and elegance with a twist. Bring on next summer’s hair trends and get inspired to try something new!

Head to head: London Fashion Week’s SS15 latest hair trends

I know you’re probably just getting your head around the new, fast-approaching winter season, and thinking about which winter coat to buy. But it’s always good to look ahead (and get ahead of the fashion pack) preparing for the season to come.  aiafarrangravesOur favourite hair dresser Adam Bennet went behind the scenes and interviewed Indira S, who was heading Toni & Guy‘s hair team at the Jean Pierre Braganza‘s show . He reported back with bells an whistles – here is what he found out for Spring Summer 2015

laiafarran

Last season’s intricate braids were gone and everything was more simplified – which doesn’t mean that it’s easier – quite often it’s harder to create a natural look when a model turns up from another show and you have 8 minutes to get the look done! 15 models and a team of 10 stylists from the session team. A very modern and wearable look with a side parting and a tuck behind the ear to create a hippie vibe. It looks effortless, and the good news is that you should be able to do it yourself at home.

Step by Step
Hair was prepped using Label M Blow Out Spray and was blasted dry for natural texture

beautyspotblog3
Slight tousle through the lengths and ends – to recreate this simply wrap hair around a tong for a couple of seconds to create a bend rather than a curl and pull it gently so it cools in a looser shape

beautyspotblogThe parting was on the same side for all the girls but the fringes were all placed according to suitability to retain character in each girl
To finish Label M Blow Out Spray was sprayed directly onto the hands and gently roughed through the parting to create a more, “lived in” texture

Each stylist backstage has to go through to auditions and a bootcamp in order to prepare for working with the senior session team at Toni & Guy, so you really are dealing with the ‘creme de la creme’ of the hair world. The result? A wearable, elegant, everyday hairstyle we love that you can enjoy next summer. Start practising!

London’s hot new trend…

beautyspot

I love Portobello Road, it has so much to offer – from its fruit and veg market to its stalls, cafés, interesting people and more recently some fabulous pop-up shops. I live close by, and on one of my trips down there over the Christmas holidays I made a great discovery: Alpaca from Peru.

beautyspotblog

Now, for all of those who know me I’m a big cashmere fan (borderline obsessed with it!) so it  may come as a surprise to hear that I have a new fashion crush: Alpaca. Not only is it  just as warm as cashmere but it  feels a bit lighter too. I found myself buying a pink scarf (a beautiful deep magenta) from Alpacaguapa, that I can wear with virtually everything (from my super high heels to my new Nike trainers with pink soles) and it keeps me extremely warm. The pop-up store is run by two wonderfully eccentric ladies: Carrina and Zayda, who is native Peruvian and knows her market. She told me some great and surprising  ALPACA FACTS:

  • Alpacas  communicate with each other by humming and with body language, and have the most amazing bigeyes with very long eyelashes
  • They are gentle around
    children
  • They are hardy and adaptableand mostly found in the Andean mountain ranges of Bolivia, Chile and Peru.
  • Queen Victoria is reported to have owned and worn dresses made from Alpaca and during her reign an Alpaca coat was a must-have item in your wardrobe.

beautyspotblog

The Alpacaguapa collection is great: wearable and original and the colours are stunning. Ideal for gifts – to yourself or to someone else  🙂 and a great investment. The price points are reasonable too: scarves start at £38, pashminas at £75 and jumpers at £100, so you don’t even need to break the bank. And don’t worry if you forget your umbrella – Alpaca is water resistant and will keep you dry (and throw away those itchy sweaters, Alpaca is hypoallergenic and is also fire resistant). It’s the perfect time of year for it so go and check them out online, you won’t regret it!

Alpacaguapa is available online at Alpacaguapa.com. Look out for their upcoming events.
