5 reasons to LOVE this lip balm

laiafarrangravesLips often get forgotten when it comes to moisturising. I apply cream on my face daily, but I don’t moisturise my lips unless they feel sore or I can see it’s a windy day outside. And I don’t wear make up every day – I’m a great believer in looking after your skin and in the principle that less is more – so they don’t get moisturised by wearing lipstick. However, when I came across this coloured lip balm I was converted. Jane Iredale’s Lipdrink SPF15 Lip Balm is a real find. It’s a very soft lip balm, which I tried in a brand new beautiful shade called Flirt that is subtle enough to look completely natural. It protects from the sun, intensely hydrates and adds a hint of colour to your lips. It also comes in a berry shade called Crush, a brown shade called Buff and as a lip balm with no colour, just a bit of sheen, called Sheer. So here is why I think you will love Jane Iredale’s Lipdrink:

  1. The colour: it’s soft and subtle and looks completely natural, just your lips on a better day
  2. The scent: as you apply it you will smell the uplifting scent of the zest of a lemon being crushed into your lips
  3. The fact that this product is completely cruelty free, vegan and gluten free – so it’s a little stick of goodness
  4. The ingredients: natural oils including avocado, carrot seed and lemon peel to name but a few
  5. The texture: it’s so intensely moisturising that it literally glides on and protects you from the sun for softer, more kissable lips.

Super healthy, gorgeous lips

beautyspot2

Have you ever wondered what you put on your lips? I mean what you actually put on your lips? Well, it got me thinking and I came across Lippy Girl Vegocentrics, a premium line of amazing lipsticks made only with organic and wildcrafted, natural oils and waxes and natural mineral pigments.  They’re 100% vegan, bee-free, gluten free and chemical free. I tried their shade called Ski Bunny, which (like the rest of the range) contains certified organic Castor Seed Oil, Jojoba seed oil, Carnauba Wax, and Shea Butter making it very creamy and soft. In fact just like any other lipstick only better for you and for the environment.  It’s a lovely pale natural shade that has a hint of Sixties about it, and would be ideal for a bride.  beautyspot3The lipsticks come in 12 different shades including a great red called Boss Lady and a coral shade called Me Maybe and they retail at £12.50. They’re a great investment not only in your beauty regime but in your ‘bit for the planet’. Take a look and see for yourself.

Lips to die for

beautyspotblogI love lip balm, especially the smell of some of them, but more often than not it ends up either at my desk  – gathering dust – or at the bottom of my handbag. I somehow don’t seem to use it unless I really, really need to (chapped lips, sore lips or gale force winds outside) which sort of defeats the object. And then I came across Balmi and I started using it all the time. I love the packaging, it’s really genius: a little cube (about an inch and a half square),laiafarrangraves which you open up to look like a giant pencil, and which is really easy to apply. I tried the strawberry flavour, because I love the pale pink colour, and it smells delicious. But the best thing about it is how soft it feels on application – it really melts onto your lips. It contains vitamin E, jojoba oil and shea butter, and in addition to that it also protects your lips form harmful UVA rays. Balmi also comes in Raspberry, Coconut and Mint flavours. I’m quite tempted to try the coconut flavour next…perhaps I might hint for Valentine’s Day…

Know your brushes!

Know your makeup brushes

With so many different makeup brushes around, it can be difficult to know which brush to use and the technique for best application. Here is a simple guide to show you how they can be used to ensure that you look fabulous at all times…

Face

Liquid Foundation Brushes

beautyspotblog

Foundation brushes can come in different shapes and sizes depending on the finish you would like. Their bristles are generally soft and dense to help apply liquid foundations evenly. One main design is the flat brush (right), this helps to sweep on foundation giving a finish that is perfect for day time! On the other hand, a buffing brush (left) helps to build layers if you are going for a heavier finish or applying makeup for a night out.

Mineral Foundation Brush

beautyspotblog1A mineral foundation brush is much softer with flexible bristles. This gives lighter coverage for a natural look that helps to brighten your skin without overloading it.

Contouring Brush

beautyspotblog2A technique that has recently become very popular in the beauty market is contouring; its slanted brush with rounded corners helps to bring out features of your face with different shades. This can be used for your face, cheeks and nose to create a shadow or highlighting effect and can be used with liquid, powdered or gel makeup.

Blush Brush

beautyspotblog3This is another brush which is designed to lightly add colour to your cheeks. The flexible rounded brush is perfect for sweeping over the apples of your cheeks to add instant colour. The soft and densely packed bristles help to build up a colour without becoming too overpowering and can come in different sizes to help suit the shape of your face.

Fan Brushes

beautyspotblog4Perhaps one of the most distinctive brushes, the fan brush, is a versatile brush that can be used to apply loose powder, contour and apply bronzer. The bristles are spread to ensure the powder is lightly applied and an even finish is given over all of your face.

Powder Brushes

beautyspotblog5Powder brushes are large, soft and full of bristles to help distribute power over your face evenly. You use this brush to sweep the powder over your face and set your foundation giving you the appearance of flawless, velvet soft skin!

Eyes

 Eyeshadow Brushes

beautyspotblog6There are a whole range of eyeshadow brushes that help to create diferent effects. Three that we have homed in on are the blending brush, the small eyeshadow brush and the flat angle eyeshadow brush.

The blending brush (top) helps to  blend colours together and highlight the areas such as the brow bone or corner of your eye.

The small eyeshadow brush (middle) helps to apply a colour over your eye without dragging the skin or irritating the eye, the small shape also helps to build up colour in particular areas that can then be blended.

The longer haired flat brush (bottom) is perfect for giving an even finish over the eye socket. The densly packed bristles are perfect for giving a full, vibrant colour.

Eye liner

beautyspotblog7If you are an eyeliner fanatic then there are a range of eyeliner brushes to help suit your style. The fine tipped brush helps to create a small and precise line and is perfect for gel liner. Whilst the small, flat angled brush helps you to build up the colour and blend for a smokey eye effect!

Brow Brushes

beautyspotblog8We are all loving the Cara Delevigne style eyebrows at the minute, so the best way to help define and create full eyebrows is using a slanted eyebrow brush (left). The design helps to control the application and fill in any sparse areas.

The way to tame large eyebrows and ensure there isn’t a hair out of place is by using a spiral eyebrow brush. Pictured right, it has stiff bristles to help create a distinct shape!

Lips

 Lip Brush

BeautyspotblogThe lip brush is specially designed for precise application. The small bristles are firm in order to help outline your lip and build up a heavy application, both of which ensure that your lips look flawless!

Golden lips

laiafarrangravesbeautyspotFor a lip gloss with a difference, get your hands on Belmacz Glow gold-leaf lip gloss. Created by the jewellery brand Belmacz (Julia Muggenburg introuduced Belmacz Beauty in 2008 as an extension of her work as jewellery designer), it’s always a best seller at the fabulous, cult Parisian store Colette. The gloss is available in several shades, including Moonstone, Pink Pink, Scarlet, Ruby and Infrared, and they all contain gold leaf –  giving your lips an extra depth of shimmer that I haven’t seen in any other lip gloss. I tried the Infrared, which is a rich shade of red with an unusual depth of colour. As you open the container you can see the gold leaf in the product making you feel very special indeed! The texture is soft and it stays on for hours.

Glow’s ultra-soothing formula blends natural ingredients renowned for their healing properties including candelilla cera – a vegan alternative to beeswax – and skin nurturing capric triglycerides.

Smile!

Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be a dull chore, especially since the Covent Garden Dental Spa has teamed up with Shu Uemura in Coven Garden to give you their new ‘Smile & Make-Up’ package.

It doesn’t replace your hygienist visit, but it’s a fabulous polish that will contribute to your overall oral health. It includes a a glass of champagne, a mini Diamond Sparkle Hygiene Polish (20 mins) followed by Orthodontic consultation (which is usually worth £100) and a lipstick match. The spa is hidden away in Covent Garden’s Neal Street, and it’s a friendly, relaxing space – I sat in their massage chair while I waited and nearly fell asleep! After your session there, you’re sent to the Shu Uemura store a few doors down where you’re matched with your perfect lipstick shade, by one of their resident make-up artists. I went along and was surprised when they suggested I wore a bright pink shade, as I normally go for natural shades. But t really did brighten up my overall complexion. It was a fun experience, and it’s great to have something to look forward to after going to the dentist – and they team at Shu Uemura sure know their stuff!

The Smile & Make-Up package is £99 for a hygiene clean, full makeover at Shu Uemura and £30 worth of products to choose in-store and take home.
