My favourite daily sun protection

My guess would be that if you asked any Beauty Editor to share with you their top skin care secret it might be that they wear sun protection all year round. And I’m not talking about a day cream or make-up containing  and low SPF, I’m talking about sun protection in its own right, straight down the line. Again, I’m not talking about your greasy holiday Tropical Oil, I’m talking about a much more sophisticated cream or powder you can use daily and incorporate into your day to day routine. You can really protect your skin from premature ageing by getting into this habit – that and drinking water, of course. I’ve been shopping around for great sun protection and here are two of the best I’ve come across.

Environ Sun Care RAD SPF15

beautyspotblogThis is a cream you’ll love to wear, because of its light, creamy texture and subtle scent. You can wear it under your make-up as a base layer or on its own as it provides a very slight satiny sheen. It contains antioxidants to protect from damaging UVA and UVB rays, photo damage and free radical damage. It’s suitable for all ages –  including children – face and body and all skin types, and it’s also water resistant. It’s one of those products you can get into using daily without noticing, as it’s not heavily scented, thick or greasy. But what you will notice, a few months down the line, are the effects of a well protected skin: beautifully healthy, plump and hydrated.
For more information go to Environ Sun Care RAD SPF15 is priced at £19.95. Available at environ stockists nationwide.

Jane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30

beautyspotblogThis is a great find, and one that may transform your beauty routine. It’s a translucent powder (it also comes in Golden and Tanned) that can be applied on your face, body and scalp to give you dry sun protection. It couldn’t be easier: the container has a foam sponge attached to it and you just shake it lightly and then press it onto the area you want to protect. It can be applied over your make-up or on moisturised skin to give it a finishing touch. The top of the lid has a mirror so  you can ensure you haven’t missed any bits 🙂 It’s ideal to take in your handbag or in your hand luggage when travelling as it won’t spill or leak, and being a powder it can be taken safely through customs. For more information go to janeiredale.comJane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30 is priced at £35.00 (175g).

Environ® cannot be purchased directly online, and must always follow a consultation and product recommendation by a trained Environ® Skin Care Professional. Want some sheer tint? We’ve got it covered

laiafarrangravesIf you’re after a daily moisturiser with sun protection and a hint of colour, look no further. The Sheer Tint from Dermalogica is a great light moisturiser that will smooth out your skin and hydrate it whilst adding a hint of colour to it. It’s ideal all year round because it gives you a healthy glow and protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB sun rays and it’s easy to apply – just once a day after cleansing your skin. You can use it alone as your daily moisturiser or, if like me you need an extra hydration boost, you can use it over a serum or a rich day cream. The colour is translucent enough to provide a radiant glow without looking like you’re wearing make up, giving you a natural, healthy glow. It contains hydrating Hyaluronic Acid and antioxidant Walnut Seed extracts help improve
the skin’s texture and reduce the appearance of fine dehydration lines. It also has an SPF of 20, which is great to provide your complexion with that extra protection from damaging sun rays all year round (and not just when you’re on holiday!). It comes in three shades, light, medium and dark. I tried the medium and it worked well, once I mixed it in with daily moisturiser. I also tried it as a blush, applying just a little on the cheek area and it looked great, so like any good quality product it’s a bit of a multi-tasker. The shades are very adaptable and subtle too, so one shade will accommodate a number of skin tones. As always, it’s formulated without artificial fragrances and colours – well, we wouldn’t expect anything less from Dermalogica! A good, staple investment if your skin need a pick-me up…

It’s a kind of magic

beautyspotblog13.29.35It seems that everybody takes constant photos these days, whether it’s a selfie or a Facebook update, so it’s important to look your best at all times. The latest Jerome Alexander’s New & Improved Magic Minerals is a great finishing product that adapts to all skin tones covering blemishes, age spots, fine lines and uneven skin tone. It’s a neutral powder base in a beige colour that has specs of green yellow, pink, copper and lilac in it (the Magic Minerals). When your apply the brush on the powder, the combination of the base tone and the colour pigments create a  fantastic product that reveals a brighter, more even skin tone when applied. It also contains vitamins C & E – Vitamin C helps to reduce dark skin pigmentation and  helps to combat UV rays whilst Vitamin E is a great moisturiser. All in all this is a great powder to carry around and apply when in need of adding those all-important finishing touches to your look. The product is hypoallergenic, contains no irritants, is fragrance free and also lasts for an amazing 12 hours.  You can use the Magic Minerals Powder by applying  liberally over your face with the Professional Stubby Brush, or you can buff vigorously with the Blending Sponge to set the makeup for a flawless, more finished look. Say cheese!

Trend alert: Spring looks for eye make up

beautyspotblogAs we prepare for a new season, it’s time to go through our wardrobe, and – of course – our make up bags. This Spring eye make up is all about being subtle and natural with a hint of colour. In the case of Matthew Williamson’s Spring Summer 2015 catwalk show, for example, the chosen colour was pink, but you can go for any shade you like as long as you keep it very light, and focus on that barely-there look. Work on your eyebrows and get the best shape you can (I highly recommend Shavata in Marylebone, London, for a fabulous shape) and keep your lipsticks and highlighter or blush natural by using nude tones. It’a all about clean, healthy skin and hair. Eyelashes are also big this season but, again, I recommend that you opt for a natural look (as opposed to a more TOWIE vibe). If mascara isn’t enough for you when framing your eyes, you can use some  Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes from Younique, which will attach to your existing lashes like a thick beautyspotbloglaiafarrangravesmascara once you apply some primer gel on your lashes; it will then stay on like a normal mascara to give you that great, defined look. I also tried some  Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powder and loved the shimmery finish and hydrating feeling it gave me. Curious is a great white colour that works well with that of-the-moment barely-there look and Confident is a lovely coffee shade that blends into your skin tone effortlessly.
For more information go to The Moodstruck 3d Fiber Mascara is £23 and the Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powder are £10 each or 4 for £35.

Top Pick: Blue eyeliner from Miners Cosmetics

You’re going to be seeing a lot of blue and purple eye make-up  this Autumn Winter (and lilac and violet variations), as it was a big Catwalk trend across Autumn Winter 2014 shows.  To get the look check out Miners’ cosmetics eye liner Colour & Kohl in Blue. It’s perfect to wear everyday on the water line of your eye or if you like a more made-up look you can also use it on top of you eye lid. It’s a fairly ligh dark blue, as blues go – more of a Nautical shade. You can also use their Define & Line in Blue liquid liner to add a colour-block effect and/or a feline twist. It’s versatile, long lasting and smudge proof. And actually quite easy to apply – after you’ve practised a few times, of course! Have fun 🙂

Barely there strawberry kiss

laiafarrangravesIf you like to wear natural looking make-up, you will love this product. It’s called Tin o’ Tint Strawberry, and it’s a coloured lip balm. This time of year, when the weather gets cold and windy, it’s essential that you moisturise your lips with a good lip balm, so this clever little product will multitask for you, giving you both the moisture you need and a touch of colour plus adding a delicious strawberry flavour to the mix. The colour is great, as it’s more of a stain than a lipstick, which is very on trend right now – i. e. natural lips with a hint of blush and healthy looking eyebrows. It highlights your lips ever so slightly to give you that healthy glow and make your teeth look a touch whiter. It’s ideal to wear in the day but also at night if you want to look understated but groomed.

It comes from Miners cosmetics and it’s priced at £2.99, making it a great stocking filler or gift to yourself 😉 We love it at Beauty Spot!

Fresh, fruity and classically British, Tin o’ Tint Strawberry will leave lips feeling soft, smooth and with a hint of soft red tint.

Available at, priced £2.99.

Know your brushes!

Know your makeup brushes

With so many different makeup brushes around, it can be difficult to know which brush to use and the technique for best application. Here is a simple guide to show you how they can be used to ensure that you look fabulous at all times…

Liquid Foundation Brushes

Foundation brushes can come in different shapes and sizes depending on the finish you would like. Their bristles are generally soft and dense to help apply liquid foundations evenly. One main design is the flat brush (right), this helps to sweep on foundation giving a finish that is perfect for day time! On the other hand, a buffing brush (left) helps to build layers if you are going for a heavier finish or applying makeup for a night out.

Mineral Foundation Brush

beautyspotblog1A mineral foundation brush is much softer with flexible bristles. This gives lighter coverage for a natural look that helps to brighten your skin without overloading it.

Contouring Brush

beautyspotblog2A technique that has recently become very popular in the beauty market is contouring; its slanted brush with rounded corners helps to bring out features of your face with different shades. This can be used for your face, cheeks and nose to create a shadow or highlighting effect and can be used with liquid, powdered or gel makeup.

Blush Brush

beautyspotblog3This is another brush which is designed to lightly add colour to your cheeks. The flexible rounded brush is perfect for sweeping over the apples of your cheeks to add instant colour. The soft and densely packed bristles help to build up a colour without becoming too overpowering and can come in different sizes to help suit the shape of your face.

Fan Brushes

beautyspotblog4Perhaps one of the most distinctive brushes, the fan brush, is a versatile brush that can be used to apply loose powder, contour and apply bronzer. The bristles are spread to ensure the powder is lightly applied and an even finish is given over all of your face.

Powder Brushes

beautyspotblog5Powder brushes are large, soft and full of bristles to help distribute power over your face evenly. You use this brush to sweep the powder over your face and set your foundation giving you the appearance of flawless, velvet soft skin!

 Eyeshadow Brushes

beautyspotblog6There are a whole range of eyeshadow brushes that help to create diferent effects. Three that we have homed in on are the blending brush, the small eyeshadow brush and the flat angle eyeshadow brush.

The blending brush (top) helps to  blend colours together and highlight the areas such as the brow bone or corner of your eye.

The small eyeshadow brush (middle) helps to apply a colour over your eye without dragging the skin or irritating the eye, the small shape also helps to build up colour in particular areas that can then be blended.

The longer haired flat brush (bottom) is perfect for giving an even finish over the eye socket. The densly packed bristles are perfect for giving a full, vibrant colour.

Eye liner

beautyspotblog7If you are an eyeliner fanatic then there are a range of eyeliner brushes to help suit your style. The fine tipped brush helps to create a small and precise line and is perfect for gel liner. Whilst the small, flat angled brush helps you to build up the colour and blend for a smokey eye effect!

Brow Brushes

beautyspotblog8We are all loving the Cara Delevigne style eyebrows at the minute, so the best way to help define and create full eyebrows is using a slanted eyebrow brush (left). The design helps to control the application and fill in any sparse areas.

The way to tame large eyebrows and ensure there isn’t a hair out of place is by using a spiral eyebrow brush. Pictured right, it has stiff bristles to help create a distinct shape!

 Lip Brush

BeautyspotblogThe lip brush is specially designed for precise application. The small bristles are firm in order to help outline your lip and build up a heavy application, both of which ensure that your lips look flawless!

Black is black

beauty spot blog

If you want to invest in a good mascara bursting with goodness, check out the new Black Volcanic Minerals Mascara from KORRES. It’s enriched with volcanic minerals, cotton extract, Sunflower polymers and grape to strengthen and protect your lashes. It’s very black – if you know what I mean– and will add volume to your lashes, giving them that dramatic look that can be so hard to achieve. You can apply the mascara once if you’re after a hint of make up or twice to make a statement, so it’s versatile in its usage. It’s particularly good if you have sensitive skin and you’re conscious of what products you use as it contains Marine Algae extracts to encourage lash growth by stimulating the microcirculation, and Thyme Extract, an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory & antioxidant barrier to combat environmental factors. It comes in back and in brown, both of which are great shades. I tried the black one and loved the generous brush it comes in and how easily it glides onto your lashes. If it’s not too late to add to your Christmas list I highly recommend that you do…

Kelly Brook’s new make-up range

LaiafarrangravesbeautyspotIt seems that Kelly Brook’s talents have no boundaries. When designing  her first ever make-up range, Kelly said ‘I am beyond excited with this new project – I’ve always loved make-up and playing around and experimenting with different looks and styles! I’ve taken all the fantastic tips from the world-class make-up artists I work with to create what I think is the perfect capsule collection to make you look gorgeous! It’s been an amazing challenge and I’ve loved every minute!’  This new collection will be her third instalment, and has some fantastic  key items that are definite must-haves. It’s vintage-inspired and has a pin-up feel to it. I particularly like the silvery glitter nail varnish because you can use it on its own (one coat only)  or over a colour (as many coats as you want), and – because of its nature – you can do it yourself and if it’s not applied perfectly nobody can tell.

The make-up collection features a range of nail varnishes that will work wonders in adding a pop of colour to any outfit or opt for red or black glitter to add a little sparkle! The bronzer is perfect for contouring and sculpting those Kelly-worthy cheekbones and the blushers are great at adding warmth and a rosy glow.

Kelly Brook’s make up collection will be available in selected New Look stores and online from the beginning of November with prices starting from £2.99.
