I love Portobello Road, it has so much to offer – from its fruit and veg market to its stalls, cafés, interesting people and more recently some fabulous pop-up shops. I live close by, and on one of my trips down there over the Christmas holidays I made a great discovery: Alpaca from Peru.
Now, for all of those who know me I’m a big cashmere fan (borderline obsessed with it!) so it may come as a surprise to hear that I have a new fashion crush: Alpaca. Not only is it just as warm as cashmere but it feels a bit lighter too. I found myself buying a pink scarf (a beautiful deep magenta) from Alpacaguapa, that I can wear with virtually everything (from my super high heels to my new Nike trainers with pink soles) and it keeps me extremely warm. The pop-up store is run by two wonderfully eccentric ladies: Carrina and Zayda, who is native Peruvian and knows her market. She told me some great and surprising ALPACA FACTS:
- Alpacas communicate with each other by humming and with body language, and have the most amazing bigeyes with very long eyelashes
- They are gentle around
- They are hardy and adaptableand mostly found in the Andean mountain ranges of Bolivia, Chile and Peru.
- Queen Victoria is reported to have owned and worn dresses made from Alpaca and during her reign an Alpaca coat was a must-have item in your wardrobe.
The Alpacaguapa collection is great: wearable and original and the colours are stunning. Ideal for gifts – to yourself or to someone else 🙂 and a great investment. The price points are reasonable too: scarves start at £38, pashminas at £75 and jumpers at £100, so you don’t even need to break the bank. And don’t worry if you forget your umbrella – Alpaca is water resistant and will keep you dry (and throw away those itchy sweaters, Alpaca is hypoallergenic and is also fire resistant). It’s the perfect time of year for it so go and check them out online, you won’t regret it!
Alpacaguapa is available online at Alpacaguapa.com. Look out for their upcoming events.
