My guess would be that if you asked any Beauty Editor to share with you their top skin care secret it might be that they wear sun protection all year round. And I’m not talking about a day cream or make-up containing and low SPF, I’m talking about sun protection in its own right, straight down the line. Again, I’m not talking about your greasy holiday Tropical Oil, I’m talking about a much more sophisticated cream or powder you can use daily and incorporate into your day to day routine. You can really protect your skin from premature ageing by getting into this habit – that and drinking water, of course. I’ve been shopping around for great sun protection and here are two of the best I’ve come across.
Environ Sun Care RAD SPF15
This is a cream you’ll love to wear, because of its light, creamy texture and subtle scent. You can wear it under your make-up as a base layer or on its own as it provides a very slight satiny sheen. It contains antioxidants to protect from damaging UVA and UVB rays, photo damage and free radical damage. It’s suitable for all ages – including children – face and body and all skin types, and it’s also water resistant. It’s one of those products you can get into using daily without noticing, as it’s not heavily scented, thick or greasy. But what you will notice, a few months down the line, are the effects of a well protected skin: beautifully healthy, plump and hydrated.
For more information go to www.environskincare.com. Environ Sun Care RAD SPF15 is priced at £19.95. Available at environ stockists nationwide.
Jane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30
This is a great find, and one that may transform your beauty routine. It’s a translucent powder (it also comes in Golden and Tanned) that can be applied on your face, body and scalp to give you dry sun protection. It couldn’t be easier: the container has a foam sponge attached to it and you just shake it lightly and then press it onto the area you want to protect. It can be applied over your make-up or on moisturised skin to give it a finishing touch. The top of the lid has a mirror so you can ensure you haven’t missed any bits 🙂 It’s ideal to take in your handbag or in your hand luggage when travelling as it won’t spill or leak, and being a powder it can be taken safely through customs. For more information go to janeiredale.com. Jane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30 is priced at £35.00 (175g).
Environ® cannot be purchased directly online, and must always follow a consultation and product recommendation by a trained Environ® Skin Care Professional. It seems to be a good time of year to review sun creams as this UK heatwave is in full swing!
I came across the new Organii Everyday Organics Sun Milk 50 at my local health food store a few months ago and couldn’t resist buying it…I’ve been using it all summer and it has become another favourite of mine, especially when it comes to children, because you know their preciously delicate skin is completely protected from the sun’s harmful UVA AND UVB sun rays. As a friend said to me in the park as I was applying it to my toddler from head to toe: ‘These wholesome organic sun creams leave you child looking like they’re ready to swim the channel’ 🙂
This organic mineral sun cream is vegan (another reason I like it) and fragrance free and it’s very easy to apply because of its fluid consistency – it’s not runny but it’s not a thick cream either. And it works on all skin types, so it’s ideal for the whole family. Its formulation includes extracts of jojoba, olive, sunflower and argan oils to nourish and moisturise the skin while naturally shielding you from the sun. Because of its high protection, it’s ideal for those with fair skin or those who burn quickly too: all in all a wonderfully wholesome Sun Milk you can trust and enjoy during the hottest of summer days.

If you love the smell of Baby Johnson’s baby products (let’s face it, who doesn’t?!) you’ll love this brand new fragrance from The Library of Fragrance. It’s called Baby Powder and it smells just like baby talcum powder. Of course, once you apply this Eau de Toilette on your skin, some of the top notes evaporate and it adapts to you, it might change a little, but that trusting, just-come-out-of-the-bath scent is definitely in the air: it’s a clean and comforting smell that will take you back (possibly) to your very own childhood. It’s light and fresh and great for the summer as it’s clean and breezy. The fragrance is priced at £15.00 for a 30ml. bottle and is available on their website Thelibraryoffragrance.com and Boots (online and stores nationwide}. They have some great scents like Play-doh (another memory lane classic!), Sunshine and Grass. Check them out if you’re after some delicious new colognes!
Advancing scientific research is showing us that scent is processed deep within a part of our brains that also manages emotion and memories. It’s not likely that many of us have tangible memories of being a baby, but it’s very likely that the scent of our Baby Powder fragrance subliminally takes us right back to feeling soothed, cradled and cared for. And who doesn’t want to feel like that at least some of the time?

As we prepare for a new season, it’s time to go through our wardrobe, and – of course – our make up bags. This Spring eye make up is all about being subtle and natural with a hint of colour. In the case of Matthew Williamson’s Spring Summer 2015 catwalk show, for example, the chosen colour was pink, but you can go for any shade you like as long as you keep it very light, and focus on that barely-there look. Work on your eyebrows and get the best shape you can (I highly recommend Shavata in Marylebone, London, for a fabulous shape) and keep your lipsticks and highlighter or blush natural by using nude tones. It’a all about clean, healthy skin and hair. Eyelashes are also big this season but, again, I recommend that you opt for a natural look (as opposed to a more TOWIE vibe). If mascara isn’t enough for you when framing your eyes, you can use some Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes from Younique, which will attach to your existing lashes like a thick mascara once you apply some primer gel on your lashes; it will then stay on like a normal mascara to give you that great, defined look. I also tried some Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powder and loved the shimmery finish and hydrating feeling it gave me. Curious is a great white colour that works well with that of-the-moment barely-there look and Confident is a lovely coffee shade that blends into your skin tone effortlessly.
For more information go to Blueorchidbeautyboutique.com. The Moodstruck 3d Fiber Mascara is £23 and the Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powder are £10 each or 4 for £35.

On this side of the world, as the winter months are setting in the cold weather spells are making us shiver, so what better investment could you possibly make than a cosy blanket?
A blanket couldn’t be more versatile: you can use it to relax at home on the couch or armchair while you read your favourite book or the Sunday papers, you can use it to sleep under on a chilly night (maybe add it to your duvet) or even as a coat, yes you hear me right: just belt it up and create a poncho shape or wear it over one shoulder (as seen here on Cara Delevingne at Burberry’s AW 2014 show). This is not only incredibly comfortable and warm, but a super-cool look, which has been spotted amongst celebs including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Olivia Palermo. I’ve also seen a dark grey blanket worn over a leather jacket and it looked fabulous. But when looking for a blanket, it’s important that you find something that’s light and warm in equal measures. This is where Alpaca would be my choice of fabric: it’s softer and warmer that wool, and more water-resistant than cashmere.
For a brand that delivers excellent quality at great prices, check out AlpacaGuapa, a great company which has a very user-friendly website. Check out their Lightweight 100% Baby Alpaca throw It is a really good size (184cm x 140cm) and comes in fantastic colours: blue, green, camel, dark grey, light green, dark grey, pink red and turquoise. I personally love the grey – I know it’s a bit safe but I really do like natural colours, especially in the home (white walls, natural wooden floors and touches of grey), but actually they’re all great shades so you’ll be spoilt for choice…
So, if you’re feeling like treating yourself or a friend to something to beat the January blues look no further…it’s on my wish list!
