My guess would be that if you asked any Beauty Editor to share with you their top skin care secret it might be that they wear sun protection all year round. And I’m not talking about a day cream or make-up containing and low SPF, I’m talking about sun protection in its own right, straight down the line. Again, I’m not talking about your greasy holiday Tropical Oil, I’m talking about a much more sophisticated cream or powder you can use daily and incorporate into your day to day routine. You can really protect your skin from premature ageing by getting into this habit – that and drinking water, of course. I’ve been shopping around for great sun protection and here are two of the best I’ve come across.
Environ Sun Care RAD SPF15
This is a cream you’ll love to wear, because of its light, creamy texture and subtle scent. You can wear it under your make-up as a base layer or on its own as it provides a very slight satiny sheen. It contains antioxidants to protect from damaging UVA and UVB rays, photo damage and free radical damage. It’s suitable for all ages – including children – face and body and all skin types, and it’s also water resistant. It’s one of those products you can get into using daily without noticing, as it’s not heavily scented, thick or greasy. But what you will notice, a few months down the line, are the effects of a well protected skin: beautifully healthy, plump and hydrated.

Jane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30
This is a great find, and one that may transform your beauty routine. It’s a translucent powder (it also comes in Golden and Tanned) that can be applied on your face, body and scalp to give you dry sun protection. It couldn’t be easier: the container has a foam sponge attached to it and you just shake it lightly and then press it onto the area you want to protect. It can be applied over your make-up or on moisturised skin to give it a finishing touch. The top of the lid has a mirror so you can ensure you haven’t missed any bits 🙂 It’s ideal to take in your handbag or in your hand luggage when travelling as it won’t spill or leak, and being a powder it can be taken safely through customs. For more information go to janeiredale.com. Jane Iredale Powder-Me Dry Sunscreen SPF30 is priced at £35.00 (175g).

The summer is officially over, and with the weather changes ahead, your skin may be prone to getting dry. It’s time to take action (remember that it’s better to prevent rather than cure) and to intensify your moisturising routine, ensuring your complexion remains fully hydrated. Recently on the market is a great product I’ve been using over the past few weeks; luxurious and rich (yet light and easily absorbed) the new Environ intensive super moisturiser +, has been especially designed to combat enviromentally-induced dryness so it’s ideal to use during the dryer winter months. It contains Shea butter and pure grade Lanolin to protect the skin, as well as antioxidants to help shield it from the outside world. You can use it on its own or after a serum or day cream to boost its effect. I used it twice a day after cleansing and applying a brightening serum, and loved how it simply disappeared on application leaving no trace, just a feeling of freshness and healthy, hydrated skin. As I’ve experienced with all Environ products (I’m a massive fan!), it’s very effective and does what it says on the tin, so if you’re prone to dry skin this is the moisturiser for you. It’s so effective and gentle you can use it during pregnancy, when flying and it’s even used as after care following a cosmetic peel – to help keep skin hydrated and supple.
Super Moisturiser+ is ideal for:
- skin that has become drier with age
- skin affected by environmental factors
- skin affected by changing climatic conditions
- alleviating skin dryness following a peel
- comforting sensitive or compromised skin
- additional comfort alongside Environ’s vitamin A products
- an alternative moisturiser for dry or sensitive skin
Environ’s Intensive Super Moisturiser+ is packaged in a 50 ml airless pump dispenser, is priced £29.95 and is available from Environ’s UK and Ireland distributor iiaa (www.iiaa.eu /+44( 0)20 8 450 2020). For more information go to www.iiaa.eu.
As the weather changes, you might find that your skin does too. I tend to get more dryness and sometimes the odd blemish when the weather gets warm, and I’ve always found that having a facial at this time is a great way to manage those changes and give your skin an extra boost, to ensure it’s glowing for the summer. I treated myself to a facial from Environ, one of my all-time favourite brands. Using natural ingredients and the latest scientific developments, their products really, really work and – in my experience – their treatments show results after just one session. I tried the Environ Hydra Boost facial at Swiss Cottage’s Skin 3, a great salon worth checking out (it’s a very friendly environment, which is also spotless and really efficient) and it really was a fantastic treatment. After a skin analysis consultation (where your face is scanned using hi-tech imaging equipment to reveal the condition of the skin below the surface – quite scary but I didn’t do too badly!) I was taken to a beauty room to relax and have the treatment. The treatment was so relaxing that I almost fell asleep, always a good sign! And as Faye, my therapist, talked me through each stage, explaining to me what she was using and why, I knew I was in very good expert hands. This treatment turned out to be the perfect antidote to dry skin: based on Hyaluronic Acid, this intensive treatment deeply hydrates while plumping and firming your skin, helping to reduce fine lines caused by dehydration and increasing overall plumpness. Half way through, a current is applied onto the skin to help distribute the active ingredients deep into deeper layers. The result is actually visible once you finish, revealing a fresher more rested complexion.
If you can treat yourself to a facial this month, I would strongly recommend that you try the Environ Hydra Boost facial. The 85min treatment is priced at £80. For more information go to skin3.co.uk.
I decided to have a facial to try and boost my skin a little, as it felt especially dry after the long winter months. So I headed to Skin 3 in Swiss Cottage to try a brand new treatment specifically designed to quench parched skin: the Environ HydraBoost.
Before the treatment began I had a skin analysis, the results of which appeared on a computer screen. The computer reads and processes the information and gives you a ‘score’ on different areas such as fine lines, texture and sun damage. It was really interesting as well as thorough, and provided the therapist (and myself!) with a wealth of information to work with. I noticed, for instance, that when I wash my face I tend to leave the temple area out. Go figure!
The facial begins with the application of hyaluronic acid in the form of a serum. This product holds 1000 times its own weight in water and soaks right into the skin, helping to reduce fine lines caused by dehydration. It also increases the plumpness of the lower levels of the skin. The treatment then becomes a little more technical, and a machine emitting a special low frequency was used to apply electrical pulses on my face. It had a metallic sound to it – a bit like a mosquito – but was really relaxing, and I’m told that it really helps the active ingredients to penetrate deeply. Finally, after more delicious smelling serums were applied, an alginate mask was painted onto my face and was left on for about 10 minutes, while my arms and hands were being massaged. A part from feeling incredibly relaxed, I thought this treatment was sensational. It visibly improved my skin’s texture straight away and it seemed to regain the glow it had lost. I am using the Focus Hydrating Serum at home as a maintenance product and will be sure to book a follow up treatment again soon. I was interested to learn that all Environ facials use the highest quality ingredients and vitamins A, C & E, which are essential to maintain and repair the skin.
“When skin is well hydrated it looks smoother, healthier and more youthful. A course of treatments will enhance the longevity of effects, especially when used in conjunction with Environ home care products.” Training director Tracy Tamaris.
